How to Prep for a Ceramic or Porcelain Tile Floor

High traffic areas in your home need a durable and easy to clean surface such as ceramic or porcelain tiles. Before installing tile, you will need a sturdy and solid base. In this video, you will learn how to prepare your subfloor for a tile floor installation. For this project you will need several materials such as cement backer board, polymer thin set mortar, a trowel, galvanized roofing nails/corrosion resistant screws, a drill, a saw, cement board seem tape, utility knife, tape measurer, a chalk line and a square.

First make sure your subfloor is uniform, level, the proper thickness and in good condition. You can install tile over vinyl, but be sure to remove any laminate. Using your level, check the subfloor for any high or low spots. For low spots, apply patch and leveler so that you have a uniform, even floor so that your tile does not flex or break. Next determine how much material you will need by multiplying the length vs. width then adding 10% for scrap material. If you have doors leading into the room you are tiling, make sure your cement backer board and tile will fit under the door. If not, you will need to measure your door and saw off about ¼ inch so that the door will open and close.

Starting in the corner, apply thin set mortar to your subfloor, lay the cement backer board and finally screw down the corners and sides of the board using corrosion resistant screws. If you need to cut your backer board, you will need to mark it, score it, break it, and then cut the backside. Keep setting the board and screwing it down until your floor is covered.

Once all is set, cover the joints with alkaline resistant cement board tape. Apply a thin layer of the mortar and let dry. Once it is cured you will want to measure your room to prep for tile placement. Start from the center to make even 3'x3' squares. The smaller the area, the easier it will be to lay the tile. Measure and mark your room with a chalk line. Place tiles down to see if they evenly sit from the center. Leave about a ¼ inch gap from the walls for baseboards and molding. Once your lines are marked you are now ready to set your tile. Learn how to lay ceramic or porcelain tile here:
